Journal of the Institute of Art History publishes original scholarly articles that have not been previously published in any printed or digital medium. Besides articles dealing with art history in Croatia and its broader context, we welcome contributions on topics belonging to the Central-European and European cultural space in general.
If the editorial board reaches the conclusion that the proposal does not fit the overall concept of the journal, that it is incomplete, set too broadly, weakly structured, or part of a larger text that has already been published (without bringing in any new insights), we reserve the right to reject it immediately, with an explanation, before subjecting it to the reviewing process. We will consider for publication only complete, finalized papers accompanied by high-quality illustrations (if foreseen), which satisfy the general criteria set for scholarly publications in the field of humanities and art history.
We publish integral articles written in Croatian, English, German, or Italian. Authors must ensure that the articles have been translated if necessary, copy-edited, and proofread before submission. The editorial board guarantees the translation of a summary (3600 characters including spaces) and keywords (6–8) into Croatian.
The next issue will include articles that have been submitted before May 31, provided they meet all the criteria listed above and that they have obtained two positive reviews. Articles arriving after that date will be considered for the next issue. Once an article has been accepted, the author must not publish it elsewhere without the consent of our editorial board, and even then only with a note stating where it was first published. Authors will not receive any monetary compensation for their contributions, but they are entitled to one free copy of the journal and a digital offprint (pdf).
Journal of the Institute of Art History is financed by the Ministry of Science and Education of the Republic of Croatia, thus authors will not be charged any publication fees (Article Processing Charges – APCs) and there are no submission charges. These facts define our fee waiver policy.
Editing and reviewing procedure
The editorial board will read all submitted articles and classify them into three basic categories: texts that will be sent to the reviewers for assessment; texts that will be returned to the author for revision; and rejected texts. After a maximum of one month starting from the date of article submission and the pre-review issued by the editorial board, the author will receive his or her text with suggestions for improvement. The text must then be adjusted accordingly and resubmitted in the final form to the editorial board.
Peer review (double blind peer review)
All articles are peer-reviewed by specialists involved in the same or similar research area. The reviewers are given instructions in which they are asked to formulate their opinion based on the scholarly importance of the article, assessing it by carefully reading the text and double-checking facts and statements. They will suggest improvements accordingly. The reviewers are expected to assess the articles on the basis of internationally accepted standards, whereby the most important criteria are originality and the significance of the author’s contribution to the knowledge and interpretation of a particular subject. If the article does not satisfy these basic criteria, it will not be accepted. Every article will be assessed by at least two and sometimes by three reviewers.
Authors will receive the reviewed articles along with additional instructions and suggestions that they should take into account. After the revision, the author is supposed to submit the improved version of his/her text, with all modifications clearly indicated. Those articles that must be significantly altered according to the reviewers’ suggestions may be resent to the reviewers after the revision, in case they request it.
